In April 2015, version 1 of Veeam Endpoint Backup Free was released.  Over the years this product has had many improvements and in 2017 was renamed Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows when v2 was released.  Version 3 went GA in January 2019 and in Feb 2020 v4 was GA following by v4.1 in August 2020.

This product has so many more features and much more functionality compared to where it started. One thing that has not changed is that there is a still a free version available.

A great use case for this software is a small business or home user that needs to backup their PC/laptop, however doesn’t have adeqate bandwith for cloud based backups or may not want to use a cloud backup solution.  In this case, using external USB drives is a simple solution that also ticks the box for an air gapped backup.

With 2, or more,  rotating USB drives you can easily adhere to the 3-2-1 rule of backups

  • Have at least three copies of your data
  • Store the copies on two different media
  • Keep one backup copy offsite

I’ve created a short video to show you through this process.
